Joy Haas Stuber

Joy Shea Haas Stuber

Joy Shea Haas Stuber, age 60, died Sunday, January 27, 2008 at home in Savannah after a long illness. She was born in San Francisco, California on February 21, 1947, where she attended Catholic and public schools. She graduated from San Francisco State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 1971. Joy was predeceased by her parents Raymond J. and Vera Jean Shea, and her brothers Raymond and Eugene Shea.
Joy arrived in Savannah in 1972 and began raising a family. During the 1970's and 1980's Joy was active with Savannah Children's Theatre, the Junior League of Savannah, and St. John's Episcopal Church, and with parent activities for her three sons' schools, Benedictine Military School, Savannah Country Day School, and Calvary Baptist Day School.
In 1987 Joy began a professional career by earning a Masters Degree in higher education from Armstrong State College. She worked as a learning disabilities teacher at Mercer Middle School and Largo Tibet Elementary School until her retirement in 2000.
Joy began a romance with long time family friend Larry Stuber in 1992 while both were raising children in Ardsley Park Neighborhood. Joy and Larry were married in 1997 at their home in Long Point, overlooking the Wilmington River and the marshes of Wassaw Sound. Together they enjoyed life at Tybee, traveling, white water rafting in the Georgia and North Carolina mountains, and playing mixed doubles tennis with a number of different teams at the Savannah Yacht Club and Bacon Park Tennis complex. For several years after the onset of illness in 2000, Joy continued to travel with Larry to numerous concerts and sporting events, including Atlanta performances by the Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen, and many Atlanta Falcons and SEC Championship football games.
During the past three years Joy enjoyed entertaining her two grandchildren at her home overlooking Bacon Park Golf Course in Fairway Oaks. Her favorite pastime was collecting stray golf balls hit into her front yard by some of Savannah's finest golfers attempting to navigate the difficult fariway of Live Oak/Hole Number 5, across the street from her home.
During the summer and fall of 2007, Joy advised her husband during his political campaign for Savannah City Council, and attended his inauguration on January 2, 2008. She particularly enjoyed the campaign victory celebration in December, much like she had done many times with Larry on their mixed doubles tennis teams during the 1990's, when she was the leading athlete teaching her husband a few tricks of the game.
Joy is survived by her husband Larry Stuber; her three sons, Major Bobby Haas and wife Lori of Prattville, Alabama; Brock Haas and fiancé Rebecca Hawkins, and Billy Haas, all of Savannah; her three step-children, Brook Stuber of Decatur, Georgia, Brent Stuber of Atlanta and Tess Stuber of Savannah; two grandchildren, Robert and Gracyn Haas of Prattville; her sister Carol Purdy of Fremont, California; many cousins and other family from the San Francisco Bay area, and many in-laws in Savannah.
Joy also leaves behind her two beloved Jack Russell companions, Bailey and Jack, who were by her side for the past seven years.
Larry, Robert, Billy and Brock will be forever grateful to Joy's loyal caregivers and friends Angela Bartley, Marie Bowman, and Betty Rouse, and housekeeper and friend Lisa Dubose, as well as Joy's many doctors and nurses at Memorial, Southcoast, Candler, the Neurological Institute, Islands Health Care, the Shepherd Center in Atlanta and UAB Birmingham Hospital over the last nine years.
Friends and family are invited to a memorial service celebrating Joy's life on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 520 Washington Avenue, Savannah, Georiga 31405, followed by a reception in the church social hall.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances in memory of Joy may be sent to First Presbyterian Church or St. John's Episcopal Church, 1 W. Macon St., Savannah, Georgia 31401.
